Overcoming Challenges in Outdoor Concerts: Red Hill Auditorium Case Study

Red Hill Auditorium

Overview

Simula Wakas marked a major outdoor concert delivery for SB19 at Red Hill Auditorium. With strict venue limitations, weather exposure, and a tightly coordinated multi-department bump-in, the project demanded careful planning, reliable equipment choices, and experienced on-ground execution.

elite was engaged to support the lighting delivery, working closely with the lighting designer, production team, and other technical providers to ensure the show was delivered on time, safely, and without compromise to the creative vision.

The Challenge

Red Hill Auditorium presents a unique set of constraints. Weight capacity limits, restricted access, and exposure to the elements mean there is little margin for error.

Key risks included:

  • Bump-in congestion leading to delays across departments

  • Weather exposure, including rain, dust, and heat

  • Equipment reliability in an outdoor environment

  • Last-minute changes typical of touring artists

Any misstep could have resulted in delayed rehearsals, compromised design outcomes, or equipment failure on show day.

Our Approach

Rather than forcing a standard solution, elite focused on adapting the system to suit the venue and the designer’s intent.

  • Worked closely with the lighting designer to optimise fixture placement within the venue’s strict weight capacity, ensuring the design vision was maintained without exceeding limits

  • Prioritised IP-rated fixtures, not just for rain protection, but for long-term reliability against dust and heat common to the site

  • Implemented redundant control infrastructure to safeguard against failures and maintain uninterrupted operation

  • Collaborated directly with the client scheduling team to plan strategic bump-in timings, reducing congestion and allowing all departments to work efficiently

  • Liaised with other technical providers to ensure smooth integration across lighting, audio, staging, and power

This approach reduced risk across the board and kept the production moving forward, even as conditions changed.

The Outcome

The show was delivered on schedule, with no weather-related failures and no impact to the creative intent.

The client valued:

  • Clear, professional advice that removed stress from the planning process

  • elite’s deep, practical knowledge of Red Hill Auditorium, allowing informed, strategic decisions early

  • A flexible team willing to adapt to last-minute artist requests

  • Prompt, direct communication throughout the project

  • Proactive coordination with other technical departments

The result was a smooth delivery that allowed the artist, designer, and production team to focus on the performance — not the problems.
